finger popping sound

topic posted Sat, January 26, 2008 - 10:30 PM by  Andrew
I was climbing today at Great Western Power Company in Oakland. Pulled on a hold and heard a popping sound in my left ring finger. Not much pain when bending and straightening, but now I can't pull on it much and it won't straighten completely. Mostly kinda achy.

any thoughts? treatments?

Stop climbing on it Immediately. Rest, ice, ibuprofin, doctor!

My guess? Some kind of ruptured tendon. Here are a couple of online links which explain a bit more about some of the more common injuries and treatments... but may I repeat, see a doctor?

    Good luck....

I did something similar a while ago. I cannot urge you the importance of taking care of this.

My solution was to splint it while it was tender and use it as little as possible. I took off several months before returning to climbing, and when it didn't feel right I took off more time. I didn't climb for about six months, but now I am back just as good as before.

1.5 months out and my finger is still swollen and won't completely straighten. Went to a hand specialist. He said nothing is completely torn, aggravated the pulley in my finger closest to my palm. Aleve twice a day, and if that doesn't help a cortisone shot. Also asked him about the clear oozing stuff that came out of my right index finger's middle joint last year - sinovial fluid due to arthritis, and the random achiness in my left thumb - arthritis.

"yep" he said,"Mid thirties, that is when it starts to happen...Your climbing days are numbered."

good thing I only like to climb easy stuff!

1.5 months is nothing. give it another two before you try to climb on it.

splint it to the finger next to it to relieve stress. use it sparingly. take it easy. you'll recover.

mine took about 6 months to fully recover. after that waiting period i started climbing simple routes and I taped my fingers together so that it didn't cause any unnecessary strain while I was getting my strength back.

your climbing days are only as numbered as you decide they are. I have a few years on you and I'm still at it.

I hate to say this, being a fitness professional, but doctors are full of shit. They cant tell you the whole truth because of their insurance. He cant tell you that you can fully recover, or that you can climb with arthritis, because if they do and you hurt yourself then its on their head.
***I'm not saying don't listen to your doctor*** just that your climbing days ARE NOT numbered. Take at least one and a half more months off COMPLETELY and then work back up to hard stuff. Tape works wonders.

                Thanks

I haven't gotten back to the gym yet. My finger has more strength, but is still swollen and not completely straight. My finger was taped when it popped. guess I should tape it more firmly.

                itchin' to climb though.

No no I wasn't implying that you didn't tape your fingers. What I am saying is that when your finger gets better continue to tape it and you will have years and years of climbing!

I have been back to the gym a couple times, taped my finger. A little sore while climbing, but felt good afterwards. Only done easy stuff...no crimping.

slowly getting back on the horse...
